What the If Earth was Teeny TINY?
MORE ON THE IF THIS WEEK:
1. Around the World in 80 Days
Take a fictional trip around the world (the regular sized one) with the classic work by Jules Verne here! For those who like movies better, here’s a trailer of the 1956 movie adaptation. If you’re interested in finding out more about this 80-day trip, check out this discussion about its actual feasibility!
2. The Little Prince
To read (or review! Definitely worth it) Le Petit Prince, check out the PDF here. Paramount also made a movie for this charming story! Here’s a link to the trailer. For more on the background and context of the book’s creation, read this article.
3. Escape Velocity
In a world where you can’t just launch yourself off the planet with a running jump, getting things out into space is actually quite a challenge. Read more on escape velocity and how it applies to space missions from NASA.
4. Horizon Calculation
For the mathematically-inclined out there, here’s the equation for finding out the apparent horizon based on height. The diagram attached gives a good idea for how a smaller radius of the planet would alter what we can see.
5. Trojan Asteroids
For more on Jupiter‘s Trojan asteroids and the space mission planned for exploring them, go to NASA’s website here. Additionally, turns out Earth has a Trojan asteroid too! Read more here.
Special thanks to Kyle Crichton, Howard Zheng and Illia Zheng for their help with the show.
